The Pittsburgh Steelers could face a dilemma at the end of this season if the team chooses not to sign cornerback Joe Haden back. The jury is very much out on James Pierre and Justin Layne and the other guys on the roster feel more like situational players as opposed to every-down, boundary cornerbacks.
Here are the top six cornerbacks in the 2022 NFL draft the Steelers should consider.
Kaiir Elam, Florida
Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports
There isn’t a cornerback who is a better fit for the Steelers in the upcoming draft than Florida’s Kaiir Elam. He’s so fluid and explosive he would be a perfect replacement for Joe Haden and give Pittsburgh a new No. 1 cornerback.
Ahmad Gardner, Cincinnati
Katie Stratman-USA TODAY Sports
Cincinnati’s Ahmad Gardner has some of the best ball skills in the draft and plays with a ton of confidence. Gardner gets attention for his physical gifts but he’s still a smart, heady player.
Andrew Booth Jr., Clemson
Clemson’s Booth is another guy with excellent ball skills and the ability to track the football well in the air. What Booth lacks in ideal height he makes up for with elite length and tremendous leaping ability.
Mykael Wright, Oregon
Stan Szeto-USA TODAY Sports
Oregon’s Mykael Wright is the smallest guy on this list but it’s hard to watch him play and not think of Mike Hilton. He’s physical, aggressive and multi-talented.
Trent McDuffie, Washington
Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports
McDuffie looks to be the next great cornerback to come from the University of Washington. Of all the guys on this list, none play with the level of explosive athleticism McDuffie crams into his 5-foot-11 frame. Not the most polished guy from a technique standpoint, he’s very coachable and wants to be great.
Josh Jobe, Alabama
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports
You never want to bet against an Alabama cornerback and Josh Jobe has all the potential to be a solid NFL starter. I want to see him show better play recognition and improve his technique but everything he’s great at you cannot coach and everything he isn’t great it is well within his grasp.
